Pediatric Integration Part 1: The Youth Mental Health Crisis and Opportunities for Integrated Care
The United States is amid a youth mental health crisis, with alarming increases in youth suicide rates in recent years. Children and young people of all ages have been impacted by major events in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, rise in social media use, community violence and natural disasters and other significant global events. In addition, historical marginalization and oppression has disproportionately impacted children and young people of color, and other marginalized identities such as those in rural communities and those who identify as LGBTQ+, who experience significantly higher rates of suicide and co-occurring conditions intersecting across various health and social needs.
Pediatric integration can be a key strategy to preventing and improving health outcomes among children and young people so that all have access to comprehensive and equitable care to live long and healthy lives. Integrated care models promote care that addresses the whole child by providing preventative care, early intervention, family engagement and support, cross-system collaboration and linkages to the community and other social service needs.
