Educating Undergraduate Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Students in Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Using an Online, Interactive Simulation
View Resource
Koetting and Freed discuss the use of eLearning as a tool to train nursing students in SBIRT procedures. Fifty eight undergraduate nursing students practiced with the learning program SBI with Adolescents by Kognito®, which simulated conversations with potential SBIRT patients. Participants were asked to take pre- and post-test surveys assessing their substance use knowledge, confidence in screening patients for substance use issues, and opinions on SBIRT implementation within nursing practice. Nursing students showed significantly higher confidence levels with SBIRT in the post-test. Koetting and Freed thus concluded that eLearning can be a useful tool for incorporating SBIRT into undergraduate nursing curricula.
