Bäck et al. argue for increased focus on addiction education in medical schools in Massachusetts. Survey results indicate that only one tenth of medical students surveyed feel that they receive adequate training around addiction medicine, while almost all respondents reported that addiction medicine is an important area in which to receive training. The overall conclusion is that there is a need for medical students to receive additional training in addiction medicine, more clinical exposure to patients with substance use disorder and increased mentoring from faculty members who specialize in addiction medicine to better prepare medical students to treat patients with substance use disorder.
