Demystifying Relapse Series

The term “relapse” carries a lot of weight and has many layers. It represents a significant challenge for individuals battling substance use disorder (SUD). It’s also more than just a setback — it’s a complex issue intertwined with physiological, psychological and societal factors.

Unlike other chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma, SUD relapse carries a heavier stigma, hindering individuals from seeking the support they need. This stigma, coupled with societal pressures, creates barriers to treatment and perpetuates the cycle of addiction. It’s time for a societal shift in our perception of SUD.

To support this shift, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, in collaboration with the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers and partnering contributors, presents the Demystifying Relapse series.

The series’s first brief explores the concept of symptom recurrence, emphasizing the need to redefine societal perceptions and expectations, while the second brief examines the complexities faced by individuals returning to treatment after a recurrence in symptoms.
